3-Ingredient Homemade Moisturizer

Fair Trade Shea Butter, doTERRA Smart & Sassy, macro organic Virgin Coconut Oil.

You’ve heard it many times before; our skin is our largest organ. What we absorb through our skin is just as important as what we absorb through our gut wall. This is why I choose to make my own face and body moisturizer. I like to keep things quick and simple so I use three basic ingredients; 100% authentic fair trade shea butter, pure essential oils and organic virgin coconut oil.

Ingredient breakdown…..

ALAFFIA Shea Butter: I love this brand because it is Ethically Traded in West Africa (I purchase mine on i-herb). It is unrefined and unscented, which means no synthetic frangrances, no parabens and suited to all skin types. This shea butter is biodegradable, vegan and not tested on animals. Butyrospermum parkii (Shea) Butter is deeply moisturizing providing protective fatty acids, vitamins and minerals for soft skin.

doTERRA Smart & Sassy: one of my favourite blends; Grapefruit Oil, Lemon Oil, Peppermint Oil, Ginger Oil, Cinnamon Bark Oil. This is a warm, spicy, herbal blend that I like to diffuse in my bedroom, infuse into tea and massage into my body. You don’t have to use this particular oil, use whatever you feel drawn to (Wild Orange is another favourite).  doTERRA (meaning gifts of the earth) essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) which prove endless emotional and physical wellbeing benefits. When experimenting with different oils, make sure you check the bottle for advice on ingestion and contact with eyes if you’re making a facial moisturizer.

macro organic Virgin Coconut Oil: there are loads of decent coconut oil brands out there, macro organic is just one of them (Pete Evans Raw C, Melrose and Planet Food are others). Just make sure you purchase one that is organic, virgin, unrefined and coldpressed with no other ingredients but 100% coconut oil. I use coconut oil for pretty much everything; moisturizing, cooking, cleaning, sun lotion, lubrication, deodorant, toothpaste, you name it…it can do it. Don’t get caught up in the saturated fat debacle. Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) which are easily digested and go straight to the liver for energy production. Coconut oil promotes health and longevity and has been used for thousands of years by traditional cultures.

I basically just mix some coconut oil into the shea butter and add a few drops of oils. The quantities depend on the consistency you prefer; I use about 1Tbsp of coco oil to 150g of shea butter (it’s really hot in Central QLD so the shea butter is already quite soft) and 3-5 drops of oil. I find after a shower is the best time to lather myself in this magical lotion.
